Don’t be afraid to stand out.
The job market feels crowded right now BUT your unique skills and experiences can and will set you apart…if you highlight them.
When I was applying for science and medical writing roles, I had no idea my YouTube channel would make me a more attractive candidate—but it did.
When I interviewed with an academic institution for a role in student career development, I had no idea that my experiences as an international student to the US would help me speak to exact needs the office was trying to fill. It did. I got the job and then turned it down.
Everything that has happened to you on your educational and occupational journey, or even just your life journey, is a potential key to a career door.
Don’t hide it. Highlight it on your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. Employers are looking for candidates who bring something extra to the table. Don’t hide your extra!
The Bold PhD Podcast
In this week’s episode, I spoke to Anita Dubey about her long career in scientific communications and how she is now turning that into a consulting business. I am a BIG FAN of PhDs and academics turning their knowledge and experiences into consulting businesses. This will be a good one if you’re interested in that sort of stuff too. You can watch the episode on YouTube or listen on your favorite podcast app.
Other episodes of podcast for your listening pleasure include:
1 – This PharmD built a successful MedComms agency after layoff
2 – He dropped out of a PhD program to fight directly for patients
3 – Leaving Academia when it no longer feels authentic to you
