“I have a six-figure job. I just got into a PhD program. Do you think I should quit my job to start the PhD program?”

Two years ago, this is a question someone asked me via direct message on LinkedIn.

The decision to pursue a Ph.D. or not is a personal one. Depending on which phase of life you’re in, choosing a PhD program over a job could have far-reaching consequences. When I started my PhD program, I was unmarried and had no children. I could take certain risks, and the only person impacted would be me.

If you have dependents and more responsibilities than I had as a 26-year-old single woman starting her PhD, that might look different.
