In a recent interview with Dr. Danielle Taschereau Mamers, we walked through how she literally approached her job search like a research project.

I’ve been saying this – gotten some heat for it too – for years.

This ain’t the world our parents grew up in. My father was recruited from his university to work as a researcher, and he retired from the same research institution almost 40 years later.

We don’t need a savvy economist to tell us those days are no longer with us.

In my upcoming book, Navigating the P.I.V.OT, I wrote in depth about treating your job search like a research project.

The interview with Dr. Mamers is a perfect primer for the ideas I share in the book. Watch or listen that episode of The Bold PhD Podcast here.

Random thought on retirement

I don’t like the idea of retirement. Yes, I suppose that, especially in our current world, people retiring may mean more positions open up for younger talent.

What I don’t like about the subtle messaging of the idea of “retirement,” though, is that you will work really hard today, make sacrifices, and miss important dates, for a day in the future when you finally get to reap the rewards of your hard work.

How about enjoying “mini-retirements” throughout your life? So that when the “big one” finds you at age 60, 65, or 70, you seamlessly pour yourself into passion projects you were working on your whole working life anyway, marking an even richer v 2.0 of your life?

That’s all for this week.

Talk later.
