I’m a fan of looking in unlikely places for job opportunities. Which is why when I heard this on a podcast this week, I had to share it.

Every company is a now tech company. Here’s why that matters to you…even if you don’t care about tech jobs.

When you look at what “non-tech” businesses advertise to consumers, it is not obvious that they are undercover tech companies.

  • Popular grocery chains.
  • General stores like Wal-Mart and Target.
  • Beauty supply stores like Sephora too.
  • Banks too.

They all have apps and technology to help them run their businesses.

Guess who is working on those?

When most people think “tech” they think about Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

But there might be an opportunity for you with some of these companies that need and use technology to run their businesses.

But this is not just about tech or tech jobs.

This is about finding opportunities in unlikely places.

Like the PhD I interacted with who went to work at Victoria’s Secret…as a UX Researcher.

Or the other PhD who ended up working in marketing for an anime company she used and enjoyed.

There are opportunities in niche markets that often get overlooked because we’re looking where everyone is looking and competing for the same roles when there are opportunities almost nobody talks about.

My challenge to you this week is to think about and pay attention to these slivers of the market that hold opportunities nobody is talking about. Look in places you would NOT normally look.

Listen to this week’s The Bold PhD Podcast episode where I speak with Dr. Crystal Herron about going from a Math major, to a PhD in the biomedical sciences, to starting her own consultancy…and why twists and turns in your career are okay.
