One of the weirdest feelings when you start looking for jobs outside academia is the VERY real struggle of feeling both overqualified and underqualified for the jobs you come across at the exact 👏🏾 same 👏🏾 time!
It’s not just you. I’ve been there.
Is there a perfect remedy for this? Maybe not. However, in interacting with hundreds of PhDs navigating this switch, the following can help.
Before you fully jump into the job market, spend the next 2 or 3 months investigating any gaps you might have when it comes to the type of role you’d like to pursue.
A few things happen here:
1. You will identify the gap.
2. You will find ways to bridge the gap – whether that is through an experience or self-learning.
3. You’ll have language to address the gap if it comes up in an interview.
4. You might even have some time to build a mini-portfolio to demonstrate basic competency.
Not a cure-all, but it helps.
Also, you are PERFECTLY qualified.
